It’s a project that’s been three years in the making, but is finally ready to be revealed. The Barns of Freeling has launched its new silo accomodation among the largest hay-producing regions in the state.
They’re custom-built grain silos, locally manufactured in the Barossa, which from the outside look like a simple silo but on the inside have been stylishly transformed into three fully-insulated boutique accommodation retreats.

“We were brainstorming how we could put more accommodation on the property and then our son suggested silos. They fit perfectly into the look of the countryside and look beautiful. We brought [JBG Architects] on board and they really helped us figure out how to create that wow factor,” the Schuster family tells Glam Adelaide.
The silo accomodation sits on a property at the edge of Freeling, which also hosts a century-old barn which has been restored into a function area. The area is one of the main gateways into the Barossa Valley, and only an hour from Adelaide’s CBD.
“The best part is that we’re centrally located between other regions. It’s a different outlook on accommodation, instead of looking out towards a vineyard you can experience agriculture at its best by laying in bed and watching a tractor go past or looking out towards the animals,” the Schuster family says.

The one-bedroom adult stays are a touch of luxury. With a soaring roofline, polished concrete flooring and black steel accents, the open-plan lounge, dining and kitchenette area instantly creates the feeling of a trendy New York loft apartment.
A curved staircase leads up to a light-filled loft bedroom and additional sitting area that opens out to a spacious balcony through glass French doors.
“The bedroom upstairs takes up half of the silo, roughly 9 x 4.5m with a beautiful lounge which you could sit on and have a cup of tea looking out the window into the countryside in the morning,” the Schuster family says.
“I can also imagine it being a great place mid-week for creatives like writers or artists to come and get their juices flowing. You can be there completely alone and feel like you have the place to yourself, its so peaceful and beautiful inside and out.”
