The Battle Is On! Adelaide Hills Vs. French Wine

Adelaide Hills winery Sidewood Estate will pit themselves against French equivalents in a blind tasting dinner as part of Winter Red this July. No pressure.

All wine is good. Even, at points in time in our lives we’ve thought casked wine is appropriate. The point is, we don’t like choosing sides. Wine is wine. French or Adelaide Hills? The real winner is simply the person drinking.

But for the sake of competition (and Hills folk never back down from a good battle) the crew at Sidewood Wines will be pitting themselves in a blind tasting with French varieties that are either the same or similar alongside a specially created 5 course dinner designed by Maximillians Head Chef Jamie Laing. This is all a part of the Adelaide Hills’ Winter Reds weekend (which we’ll have more info on soon) on Saturday 30 July with tickets available from the restaurant.

Here are the key match ups you need to get to know:
Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve NV                             v             2013 Sidewood Chloe Cuvee
Mareuil Sur Ay, Champagne FR                                                 Adelaide Hills

Josmeyer Fromenteau Pinot Gris 2013                     v             2015 Sidewood Pinot Gris
Alsace FR                                                                                       Adelaide Hills

Patrick Piuze Terroir de Chablis 2014                       v             2015 Sidewood Chardonnay
Chablis FR                                                                                       Adelaide Hills

Bouchard Monthelie 2012                                         v             2015 Sidewood ‘777’ Pinot Noir
Cote de Beaune, FR                                                                     Adelaide Hills

Delas Freres ‘Les Grands Chemins’ Crozes             v             2014 Sidewood Shiraz
Hermitage 2010                                                                            Adelaide Hills
Northern Rhone FR

I mean, picture this blind tasting paired with incredible South Australian produce. Just a heads up, the host for the evening will be Sidewood’s winemaker Darryl Catlin, so you can imagine how ropeable he’ll be if they don’t take home the crown. No pressure!

Sidewood Vs France Wine Battle will be on Saturday 30 July. Tickets are $150 per head, which for 5 courses and 10 glasses of wine seems a wise investment. Tickets are available online here or call Maximillians on 8388 7777
