The Brand New City Laneway Bar You Must Try

The addition of GypsyDragon has topped off the reinvigoration of Topham Mall; this funky, outdoor, nook with an Asian twist, opens to the public TONIGHT.

Opening to the public tonight, laneway bar GypsyDragon, 44 Waymouth Street, may be tucked away in Topham Mall but it certainly grabs your eye and draws you in. The adjoining restaurant Kangkong imparts the funky Asian influence present in the food, drinks, and even the décor.

Casual nibbles that require no cutlery can be brought across from the Kangkong kitchen, such as delicious crispy duck spring rolls, sesame prawn toast with bacon mayonnaise, and Korean Fried Chicken with a spicy dipping sauce; much yummier than the other type of fried chicken you can get from that , trust us on that.

GypsyDragon has a decent sized wine and beer list, but we recommend you go for the cocktails with an Asian twist. We’re finally enjoying the warmer Spring nights, and a chilled cocktail in the outdoor bar is just what the doctor ordered; the Vietnamese espresso martini certainly has the wow-factor.

This place is perfect for drinks after dinner at the nearby Press, Bistro Dom, or George’s on Waymouth. Or you could stop by for drinks and nibbles in your lunch break, as it opens its doors at midday Tuesday to Saturday.

The live DJ music, the bright lanterns hanging above, and the graffiti dragon and geisha on the wall, gives GypsyDragon a unique, fresh ambiance. With the weather heating up, this is the perfect time to satisfy your curiosity and tick this new laneway bar off your list of funky places to try.

Bearing in mind that it is set in a laneway, the cosy space may fill up quickly on Friday and Saturday nights (staying open until 1am), and the small amount of seating areas there will be snatched up even quicker. Currently there are no outdoor heaters, so while it’s an ideal setting for a warm night, we recommend bringing a jacket if it’s a colder evening.

Get down there and try it out for yourselves, and thank us later!
