The Cafe That Serves Up Popcorn Chicken And Gin Cocktails For Brunch

Cheers to lazy weekend brunches!

This may just be our new favourite brunch combo.

If you’re anything like us, popcorn chicken seems like a good idea any time of day – and this inner north cafe has it on their breakfast menu!

Mekko Market and Cafe in Prospect is run by Irene and Marjukka – both are originally from Finland and only met after they each moved to Adelaide. They opened the bright and airy cafe in Prospect just under a year ago, with a touch of their native Finnish backgrounds.

On their all-day menu you can find plenty of brunch and lunch classics, a few Scandinavian dishes, and of course, the popcorn chicken!

Mekko’s version of popcorn chicken is spiced crumbed free range chicken pieces, piled high on a bed of smoky hummus, with sweet and spicy dressing and crunchy salad.

Not only is it a delicious combo, in great news for our coeliac friends, it’s completely gluten free.

And surprisingly – this dish actually has its own Scandinavian touch. For a long time, there was no KFC in Scandinavia, so Irene’s partner Tom, who is a chef, worked tirelessly to perfect his own version – a version he believes is even better than the original.

And it seems plenty of people agree – when Mekko took the popcorn chicken off their brunch menu, they had to put it right back on there due to overwhelming demand.

And what better to wash down crumbed chicken for brunch than a gin cocktail?! Mekko has got a whole cocktail menu of drinks that go down nicely when you’re in the mood for a pre-noon tipple (or just as nicely post-noon too).

Keeping with the Finnish theme, you can have a Lonkero. The incredibly refreshing drink is essentially a G&T with freshly squeezed grapefuit.

Or want something that’ll make your Insta pop? The beautifully purple Midnight Sun has gin, Indian tonic water, cranberries and topped with a twig of rosemary.

(And while you’re there, Mekko also has a particularly well-stocked op shop attached, so you can brunch then browse.)

Cheers to lazy weekend brunches!

Mekko Market and Cafe is at 89 Prospect Rd, Prospect. Check them out on Facebook here.
