Saturday saw the launch of the new CrossFit Beach Mode in Brighton and it had locals so curious about the hype they were lining up outside the doors in eager anticipation of its reveal.  Loud beats beckoned you into the centre where you were immediately surrounded by brightly coloured weights, bikes, rowers, oversized boxes and toys that lined the walls.

With gymnasium rings literally hanging from the ceiling you’d be forgiven for thinking this was just a big kids playground.  And believe me, the desire to play like a kid is overwhelming and refreshingly, very much encouraged.

Steve Willis or as we know him “Commando Steve” and Michelle Bridges also joined in the fun leading a workout of push ups, ass-to-grass squats and lunges with everyone from regular gym goers, to entire families and even the kids eager to be part of the action.

Forget the fashionable gyms where patrons can be seen in velour tracksuits and makeup doing everything they possibly can to avoid a sweat; this place is made for real people who are serious about improving their life in a no frills approach.  The aim of the CrossFit game is simply to push yourself to be better than you were yesterday and this translates to an inspiring environment, without the pricey memberships that put hair straighteners in the bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling “grunt mirrors” in the weights section (Can I get an Amen?!).

For those of you who don’t know what CrossFit is, it’s a type of primal fitness where functional movement is the focus, be it animal-like movements such as bear crawls or inch worms, to swinging from the monkey-bars, or bodyweight movements such as push ups, pull ups and even a simple but challenging movement called a ‘burpee’ (and no, it has nothing to do with the release of gas from your digestive tract).

The beauty with this type of fitness is that it’s easily scalable depending on your experience level so you don’t need to be an expert Olympic lifter, you can be your average Joe Blow who in the last ten years hasn’t lifted more than his own pants from around his ankles.

And in true CrossFit spirit, part owners James Newbury, SA’s Fittest Man and partner ex-Totally Wild TV Host Kayla Banfield are pushing the boundaries of fitness as we know it, by incorporating a new kind of workout at CrossFit Beach Mode where exercise meets the water – with paddle boards, kayaking and other fun water-based activities.

If the thought of waltzing into a new fitness centre that’s well known for its obscenely fit muscly men and women seems intimidating to you, rest assured that the most intimidating thing about the entire experience will be squeezing yourself back into those 80’s flared Lycra pants, because the CrossFit people albeit strong and tough to look at, are a very friendly and welcoming folk.

So dust off those 80’s lycra’s and wave goodbye to the muffin top, it’s time to unleash your inner child at CrossFit Beach Mode.
