The Cumby closes its doors ahead of major refurbishment

Popular live music venue and beloved local pub The Cumberland Hotel is getting a big revamp with refurbishments and new extensions planned. As of 7 April, The Cumby has already shut up shop to get a head start on renovations, fulfilling plans that date back to 2023.

Now, just to be clear, we’re talking The Cumberland Hotel in Glanville, not The Cumberland Arms on Waymouth Street!

It’s the end of an era for the iconic hotel, dating back to the public house’s opening in 1870. But don’t worry, it’s really just a costume change!

As a beloved grassroots music venue drawing Port Adelaide Enfield locals to this coastal favourite each weekend, The Cumby is about to get a facelift that will only strengthen its standing as a live music hotspot.

The specifics are yet to be confirmed for the venue’s refurbishment, but we do know there will be a brand new bistro with a menu to match.

The Cumby might be getting a glow-up, but it’s not losing its soul.

The heart of The Cumby, the indoor bar and bar seating area, will remain untouched. Pint-pouring central isn’t going anywhere.

The refreshed space will also feature big glass doors that open onto steps and a ramp, giving punters easy access to the outdoor pergola zone. It’s all about keeping things open, easy, and inviting.

Heading out to the lawn, expect to see a refreshed beer garden with plenty of relaxed seating.

And yes, the outside is getting some TLC too. Expect a fresh coat of paint on the signage, doors, windows, and front-facing quoins, while the beautiful old stone wall stays put. The heritage facade will be lovingly restored, a nod to the pub’s rich history, even as it steps into its next era.

Although the reopening date is yet to be confirmed, Di from the Cumberland Hotel said, “We’ll be back open as soon as we can—even if only some parts are finished, we can’t wait to have people back.”

But before the tools came out, the amps got one last workout.

Last weekend saw a final night of magic before construction began on a shiny new chapter. If those walls could talk, they’d probably have been shouting: crank it up and send us off in style!

The Cumby has long been a west side go-to for live, loud, and local music. With gigs pumping every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it’s been a launchpad for countless homegrown bands and a second home for music lovers and local punters.

We’ll be counting down the days ‘til the grand reopening – and the return of those electrifying live sets we know and love.

The Cumby may be evolving, but its spirit? That’s staying exactly the same.
