The iconic Polly Waffle finally returns after discontinuation in 2009

“We have a long history of saving and supporting nostalgic Aussie brands like Violet Crumble and FruChocs, so we have been excited by the opportunity to bring Polly Waffle back.”

After a long wait for fans, Menz Confectionery has unwrapped the details of its latest innovation: Polly Waffle Bites. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the fourth-generation family-owned business, as it introduces a modern twist on the classic Polly Waffle bar, a treat that has been missed since its discontinuation in 2009.

The new Polly Waffle Bites are poised to tantalise taste buds with their irresistible combination of soft vanilla marshmallow, rich milk chocolate, and crunchy wafer pieces. These bite-sized delights are expected to grace retailer shelves nationwide from late April 2024, offering a contemporary take on the nostalgic favourite first introduced in 1947.

In a bold move, Menz has decided that the Polly Waffle Bites will permanently replace the original bar format. This decision stems from the challenges associated with manufacturing the traditional bar, including complexities, expenses, and the additional time required for production. Menz, which took over the rights to produce Polly Waffle from Nestlé in 2019, has invested several years in research and development to bring this iconic treat back to life, all while navigating the hurdles of manufacturing locally in South Australia.

The journey to revive Polly Waffle has been anything but smooth. The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant obstacles, with border closures impeding the development team’s ability to travel for sourcing and testing essential manufacturing equipment. Moreover, the original machinery for creating Polly Waffle was decommissioned by the previous manufacturer, necessitating a fresh start from the ground up. Despite these challenges, Menz’s commitment to reviving beloved Australian brands remained unwavering, supported in part by a grant from the Australian Federal Government’s Manufacturing Modernisation Fund.

Menz CEO Phil Sims shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We have a long history of saving and supporting nostalgic Aussie brands like Violet Crumble and FruChocs, so we have been excited by the opportunity to bring Polly Waffle back.”

“Polly Waffle had not been produced in more than ten years when we acquired it, so we essentially had to start from scratch to find out how we could produce it at our South Australian factory.”

“Creating a Polly Waffle Bite was the most responsible way to make bringing back the iconic brand a reality,” Sims added, expressing gratitude for the patience and support of customers and fans.

As anticipation builds for the launch of Polly Waffle Bites, Menz promises to share more details closer to the release date. Menz Confectionery, with over 150 years of tradition, stands today as one of Australia’s largest Australian-owned confectionery businesses and the proud manufacturer of other iconic treats, including Violet Crumble and FruChocs. The company’s commitment to quality and innovation continues to endear it to consumers both in Australia and internationally, with exports reaching the USA and Asia.
