Port Lincoln, and South Australia is mourning the loss of entrepreneur Peter Teakle, who passed away peacefully at the age of 72 with his son Ben by his side. Known for his generosity and visionary leadership, Peter Teakle left an indelible mark on the Eyre Peninsula through his dedication to the wine industry and his numerous philanthropic efforts. His legacy, particularly through Peter Teakle Wines, has elevated the region into a premier food and wine destination. Teakle’s passion for excellence and community spirit will be remembered and cherished by many.

Peter Teakle, whose family has been involved in the wine industry for generations, established Peter Teakle Wines on the philosophy that to create the best product, you need the best produce and people. He firmly believed that the Eyre Peninsula, with its unique maritime climate, would yield wines that were unrivaled in quality, and it was his goal to create another wine region for South Australia.

Teakle’s vision also included a fine dining restaurant on-site to showcase Port Lincoln’s delectable local seafood and fresh produce. To bring this vision to fruition, he enlisted his son Ben Teakle, chief winemaker Liz Heidenreich, and executive chef Mark Jensen, forming a dedicated team to elevate Port Lincoln and the Eyre Peninsula as a premier food and wine destination.

On a sunny Hamilton Island fishing trip, Peter Teakle met celebrity chef Pete Evans, known for his work on My Kitchen Rules and his paleo diet advocacy. This chance meeting blossomed into a friendship that significantly influenced Teakle’s high-end restaurant which is named Line & Label. Though Evans’ controversial “paleo way” was not incorporated into the menu, his influence helped propel the project forward. Teak Corp project manager Diana Williams was instrumental in the design and rollout of this ambitious endeavour, which has since become an iconic food destination on the Eyre Peninsula.

In addition to the vineyard, Teakle purchased a 3-hectare farm adjacent to the vineyards, bringing the estate to a total of 30 hectares. This expansion included extensive orchards and a large vegetable patch to support the restaurant, which opened in 2017. The property also boasts an orchard with 400 fruit trees, 80 garden beds, and a large kitchen garden.

Peter Teakle was not only involved in the wine industry, but also a significant figure in the wine-label printing business. He took over his father’s Collotype Labels printing business in 1986 and transformed it into a multimillion-dollar international company with 34 manufacturing plants in 10 countries, employing 3,500 people. This venture marked a significant departure from the family’s business origins, which began in Adelaide in 1903.

Beyond his business acumen, Teakle was a passionate supporter of Port Lincoln and the Eyre Peninsula. He donated a life-size statue of WWI bugler Leonard Hall to Port Lincoln and spent millions supporting local business and community projects.

Teakle’s love for the ocean was evident in his sponsorship of various yacht races, including the Teakle Classic Lincoln Week Regatta, The Peter Teakle Port Lincoln Blue Water Classic, and the Peter Teakle Port Lincoln Tuna Classic. He was also a lover of speed on land, owning a collection of priceless Ferraris and sponsoring motor racing events like the Teakle Autosprint Port Lincoln.

Peter Teakle’s life was one of passion, generosity, and vision. His commitment to transforming Port Lincoln and the Eyre Peninsula into a premier food and wine destination was evident in everything he did. His philanthropy and unwavering support for the community will be remembered and cherished. Peter Teakle leaves an indelible mark on the region, and his legacy will continue to inspire and benefit future generations. The team at Peter Teakle Wines shared their heartfelt tribute, celebrating his ability to bring people together and expressing their commitment to continuing his legacy.
