Local celebrities band together to get behind struggling South Aussies

The increased cost of living and demand for affordable housing has left more South Australian’s without a home than ever before.

It’s not a new topic but homelessness has become ever more prevalent in recent months due to the housing crisis affecting so many across the state.

More and more people are finding themselves without a roof over their heads due to reasons beyond their control. Increased rent prices and low availability of houses has forced many South Australians out of their homes and into their cars or lounge rooms of friends. For example, Carly.

“Eight months ago I had a house, I had savings, I had a job, I had goals. And I sleep in a car now,” Adelaide mum, Carly, explained. Speaking to Ali Clarke from Adelaide’s Mix 102.3, Carly opened up about how the increasing cost of living and lack of rental properties changed the course of her life leaving her living out of her car and her son sleeping on his best friends couch.

Since hearing Carly’s story, the Adelaide radio station is now on a mission to help the young mum and those in a similar position and is using its platform to raise awareness of the changing face of homelessness.

And, thanks to the generosity of Mix102.3 listeners, Carly is out of her ca with listeners offering her a caravan and a site to give her a safe and warm place to sleep – as well as help get her life and her family back.

Mix 102.3 is just one of the many Adelaide businesses doing its part to raise awareness and funds for those doing it tough.

East End Cellars is currently holding its weekly Winter Soup Kitchen, serving up delicious chef-curated creations to raise money for the Hutt Street Centre and Catherine House every Thursday until mid-August.
