The Maths of Making It

Australian Numeracy Ambassador Simon Pampena demonstrates Maths for what we really want at The Science Exchange for this year’s Adelaide Fringe.

What’s the secret to fame and fortune? Looks? Talent? Opportunity? Not anymore. In today’s world you need to know MATHS.

Simon Pampena, the Angry Mathematician, takes the guesswork out of modern fame with his own formula for success: THE FAME ALGORITHM. Pampena demonstrates through careful analysis that even simple maths can explain world- wide success.

‘People love sex and people love food, hence people love Nigella Lawson. Her popularity is predicted with a simple Venn Diagram’, Pampena explains. ‘And with more maths, you can make more predictions.

‘Physicists ask: “Can I make a sub-atomic particle with only energy?” which is analogous to “Can I make a global superstar with only money?”

‘The answer is yes. Justin Bieber.’

Pampena is Australia’s leading maths communicator. He has been Australian Numeracy Ambassador since 2009 as well as writing and performing maths comedy shows for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Darwin Arts Festival, Adelaide Fringe and ABC1’s Catalyst program.

‘I use maths to drive my comedy, but who’s to say that the opposite won’t happen? In the future one of my jokes may become the basis of a new mathematical theorem. That would be awesome!” said Pampena.
