The Mouthwatering Italian Food Safari That Has Gone On To Inspire Adelaide Menu

Check out the incredible Italian food scene that one Adelaide restauranteur experienced that has gone on to inspire his Flinders Street restaurant.

Luigi’s Delicatessen has certainly solidified their position in Adelaide as one of the best places in town to for an authentic modern Italian experience. They’re serving up dishes inspired by Lui’s hometown (Pozzuoli), his family and travels throughout Italy. Lucky for us, Lui has just returned from an epic Italian food safari beaming with ideas for new menu items which are being rolled out through the deli soon like Vongole Pasta.

Check out some of his photos from Italy:

Cured meats in Trastevere, Rome.

Lui knows cured meats like the back of his hand which is why Luigi’s Deli serve up ridiculously good panins. They use similar imported prosciuttos and cheeses to the ones shown here.

Fresh pasta

This is a version of crab pasta almost identical to the one Lui serves at the deli. It’s made with fresh crab meat, garlic, butter, white wine and a hint of chilli.

It’s not hard to see why Lui lovingly describes Naples as the “heart throb of Italy” when it comes to seafood. Here you can see the fresh vongole before they’re cooked into a beautiful pasta.

Fresh homemade vongole pasta similar to the one they currently serve at Luigi’s Deli (if you haven’t tried it, do yourself a favour ASAP).

These cheese come from a town in Tuscany called San Gimignano – a medieval town that are making artisan cheeses like Peccorino fiordaliso, Peccorino with chamomile. While we don’t get these cheeses here because of the different types of soil and climate.

These are pork sausages made on Lui’s family farm in Italy. So it’s no wonder Lui has the best breakfast boards in town and one of the tastiest elements you’ll find on there are the pork sausages that he has recreated with the help of his local butcher.

Cannoli made usuing fresh pistachios blended with ricotta, dipped in chocolate chips and stuffed in a handmade shell.

Yep, this is a real photo. Damn Lui! We’re jealous as hell.

An Italian coffee that uses condensed milk and has a coffee ‘cream’ over the top. Lui has brought back some of this “coffee cream” to build a version of this coffee at Luigi’s Deli in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled.

Lui’s passion for fresh, locally sourced food knows no borders, whether it’s here in Australia or in Italy.

This is the most famous pastry from Naples called Sfogliatella, pronounced sfo-yah-tella. You can get this right on the doorstep of Pompeii, one of the most ancient towns of the world.

Zia Maria cleaning the fresh sardines > there’s a dish that Lui wants to recreate at the deli. He’s thinking a beautiful linguine dish with pan-fried sardines, garlic, white wine, fresh cherry tomatoes and walnuts.

If you’re a vegan in Italy, you have the option of beautiful fresh produce and vegetables. Lui says “you’ve never tasted a tomato like you do in Italy. It’s sun ripped to perfection. That’s when you understand why tomato is a fruit.”

Lui says he has never tasted anything like this calzone filled with fresh ricotta.

Lui’s cousin’s son, Roberto Mattera, works as a restorer in Pompeii. He’s standing here in front of a wall that he has just brought back to life and we thought this was too cool not to share! Lui and his son, Noah.

Back in Adelaide, Lui’s mission is to bring as much of the real Italian culture and experience here through importing top notch Italian produce that he loves like tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. In the meantime, you can expect to start seeing some new dishes pop up on the menu at Luigi’s Deli.

Luigi’s Delicatessen is located at 151 Flinders Street, Adelaide.
