White wine lovers, this one’s for you! This autumn, the National Wine Centre is bringing back its popular Drop In tasting series, but this time, they’re shaking it up with a brand-new theme that highlights lesser-known varietals and experimental styles that are quietly coming out of Australia’s white wine scene.
Friday, 6th March, will see The Drop In: Alternative Whites inviting wine lovers to go beyond the usual Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling or Chardonnay and explore something more adventurous. The evening will celebrate a diverse selection of Australian white wines made from varietals that thrive locally but rarely receive centre-stage attention, like Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Albariño and Falanghina, alongside a few unexpected blends.
The event brings together an impressive mix of producers from South Australia and interstate, with wineries coming from regions including McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Clare Valley, Langhorne Creek, Limestone Coast, the Riverland, and interstate, including Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Rutherglen and Goulburn Valley. Familiar names like Aphelion Wine, Golding Wines, Oliver’s Taranga, Unico Zelo, Tahbilk, Quealy Winemakers and Stanton & Killeen (just to name a few) will be on deck, with more stallholders yet to be announced.
“The Drop In is about opening minds and palates – inviting people to taste beyond the familiar and discover just how vibrant and expressive these lesser-known white wines can be,” shared Andrew Bruce, Head Sommelier at the National Wine Centre. “Varietals like Fiano, Grüner Veltliner and Picpoul thrive in Australian conditions, yet many people haven’t had the chance to truly explore them. This next iteration of The Drop In is an opportunity to do exactly that, directly with the producers.”
As with previous Drop In events, it will be relaxed and social, perfect for discovering something new. Your ticket includes unlimited tastings across the room and a complimentary Spiegelau wine glass to use throughout the night and take home as a keepsake. Plus, you’ll get plenty of chances to chat directly with the winemakers, ask questions, and compare styles side by side.
Running from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, the evening also offers a selection of food and additional beverages available to purchase, making it an easy after-work plan that’s perfect for kicking off the weekend.
With tickets priced at $55 plus booking fee, this first edition of The Drop In: Alternative Whites is sure to be a must-attend for anyone keen to get ahead of the curve and discover what’s fresh and exciting in Australian white wine right now.
