The New Mrs Q Kitchen Is A Spring Meal Must

Combining Balinese, Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese influences, chef Nu Suandokmai has constructed an intimidating menu of flavours at the new Mrs Q Asian Kitchen & Bar.

Spring has taken its time to get into gear but is now well and truly on its way. So is the brand new hot spot for Asian cuisine in Adelaide, Mrs. Q Asian Kitchen and Bar. Situated at the previous Loft Wine Bar joint on Gouger Street, a “New York meets Bangkok” vibe has transformed the extravagant ballroom space together with Asian-inspired décor scattered throughout. Whether you want to relax by the bar with a refreshing cocktail or devour into South-East Asian dishes over a catch up with friends, this place has the right balance to cater for all.

mrs-q-kitchenGlam had the pleasure of attending an intimate dinner previewing the menu hosted by chef Nu Suandokmai. The fusion of Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesian flavours is evident in the dishes they had prepared for us. Their wine list to accompany was, simply put, too easy to drink (smooth and refreshing), a 2014 Riesling by Pressing Matters and a 2015 Zinio Tempranillo particular highlights matching the food. Smaller dishes to begin the menu include vegetarian dumplings and veal and pork with betel leaf, sweet corn chicken balls and coffee duck; a fusion of coffee and duck? Trust us, it works and it’s beyond this world!

Larger dishes shine through for their diversity. We had been told that Mrs. Q is the only restaurant in Adelaide to use banana heart on their menu, commonly used by the Royal Family in Thailand, in their banana heart curry pork. Known for its peculiar taste, this all disappears when combined with a creamy sauce or curry. It packs a punch together with the perfect amount of chilli! Also impressive are the humble BBQ chicken, crispy barramundi fillet in sambai as well as a papaya salad. But be warned, your mouths will heat up from all the chilli!

Finishing off the Sticky Rice dessert with mango is perfect for summer. Nu has gained his expertise after combating the kitchen at the infamous Gin Long, Nu’s Thai (now located on Morphett Street), Nu’s at McMahon’s in Sydney as well as Bali’s Intercontinental and The Ritz Carlton in Jakarta.

The menu will be seasonal, so it can be highly likely that your next visit will have something new on there to try. If you’re after a new place to treat your taste buds to some truly authentic Asian cuisine with impeccable service, Mrs. Q should be on your ‘to-visit’ list. The perfect spot this spring and summer!
