The new suburb of Southwark in Adelaide has had its boundaries officially confirmed, following extensive community consultation and consideration of local feedback. This suburb, covering just over 26 hectares, will encompass the historic site of the former West End Brewery and extend through select residential and commercial areas to create a clearly defined community space.
Southwark is set to be bordered by the River Torrens to the north and Port Road to the east. Its limits will stretch from Stirling Street to Anderson Street, and follow Cawthorne Street south down to Light Terrace. These boundaries have been strategically chosen to align with the shapes and areas of neighbouring suburbs, enhancing the overall coherence of the city’s layout.
The post code for Southwark will remain as 5031, preserving a link to its historic roots. The area is notable for being one of the earliest suburban lands surveyed outside the central Adelaide region, with Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide’s founding fathers, building his home ‘Theberton Cottage’ here.
Recent developments highlight the state government’s commitment to revitalising Southwark, blending its rich history with modern necessities. Last month, the announcement of the ‘Southwark Grounds’ project by the Malinauskas Labor Government marked the beginning of a significant transformation. This development is planned to integrate up to 1,300 new homes with retail, commercial, hospitality, and community spaces, aiming to revitalise the former brewery site into a thriving urban hub.
The finalisation of the suburb’s boundaries was achieved through a comprehensive community engagement process which included letterbox drops, a campaign on the YourSAy website, and direct interactions with residents and businesses impacted by the changes.
Nick Champion, commenting on the project, stated: “The confirmation of Southwark’s boundaries is the next step in our vision of creating a thriving, connected inner-city community. It reflects our commitment to honouring the past while building a vibrant future for generations to come.” He added, “Establishing these boundaries is the result of extensive consultation and listening carefully to the community and local stakeholders.”
Tom Koutsantonis also shared his insights, noting, “I have been very pleased to engage with and listen to my community and convey the very clear feedback to the Government throughout this process.” He emphasised that the choice of final boundaries demonstrates responsiveness to community input, adding, “I’m confident that the new suburb of Southwark will be a prime destination for people seeking community-centred near-city living for many years to come.”
The state government has affirmed its dedication to ensuring the success of the Southwark Grounds project and the broader rejuvenation of the suburb, aiming to create a desirable living space that balances modern needs with historical charm.
