The Origin of Species – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

Presented by Holden Street Theatres, Tangram Theatre and John Hinton.
Reviewed Wednesday 22nd February 2012.

The full title of this piece, The Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection or the Survival of (R)Evolutionary Theories in the face of Scientific and Ecclesiastical Objections: being a Musical Comedy about Charles Darwin (1809-1882) is quite a mouthful. It could be the longest part of this review.

Playwright, John Hinton, in character as an amiable Charles Darwin, ad libbed a welcome as the audience trickled in for a short snippet from his production. He then moved onto a section his script, filled with humour, facts, some sneaky bits of education (don't tell your kids when you take them) and song, self-accompanied on guitar. There is also a fair degree of audience interaction, and it won't matter where you sit, he works with people right in the middle of the crowd as well as the edges.

Director, Daniel Goldman, keeps up the pace and adds plenty of movement to the performance. Although we saw only a short segment of the play, it is clear that this one is going to be a winner.
