The Original Coopers Alehouse Goes Against The Grain With MAJOR Old-School-Charm Refurb

A six-month-to-year-long project to take away all of issues with having a historic building, initially began as plans to cover a glass roof that overly heated the Arnou Woodfired, the dining space adjacent to the bar.

Amongst a plethora of pubs opting for a slick and modern fit-out when their inevitable refurbishment rolls around, the Original Coopers Alehouse and The Earl are sticking to their roots.

A six-month-to-year-long project to take away all of issues with having a historic building, initially began as plans to cover a glass roof that overly heated the Arnou Woodfired, the dining space adjacent to the bar.

From there, the change spread to the panelling, the wood oven, the chairs, tables, and suddenly plans erupted for a whole venue refurb.

Teaming up with BB Architects, renowned for specialising in conservation and restoration of heritage buildings, General Manager Nick Sando tells me that it was important to keep the essence of the original construction in 1879.

An ambitious feat which required the venue to close and cordon off areas all the while remaining open to the public.

The Arnou Woodfired now features a timber ceiling that keeps the dining space cool and cosy year-round. It also houses a new wood oven, straight from Italy, perfect for head chef, Chris Sellors’ upgraded menu.

Next to the wood oven, a custom fabricated Dry Ager sits in perfect view, to accompany the new addition to the menu, the dry aged steaks offerings. Also new to the menu is a vegan friendly section.

And it’s not just what’s in the menu, Chris’ actual menu is now enveloped in high quality, kangaroo leather.

On tap, it’s all Coopers originals, you can see your favourites lined up alongside a range of delights from SA and beyond.

Gaming has also been moved to the periphery of the bar, in its place an extension to the dining space.

The entire venue has both metaphorically and physically opened up. With walls between the bar, the restaurant knocked down to showcase the different spaces. In the place of the walls now sit large glass doors with an interesting black steel frame.

The Original Coopers Alehouse has quietly been operating amongst the refurb, but as of today, welcomes visitors to the (pretty much) finished look.

The Original Coopers Alehouse is located at 316 Pulteney Street, Adelaide and is open for lunch, dinner and late-night drinks 7 days a week.
