The People Vs Coffee

Adelaide’s newest foodie caravan is coming to an event near you soon…

Here’s a rhetorical question: when is a coffee not an appropriate drink?

From that first pick up in the morning to a smooth Espresso Martini in the evening, it would be fair to say that Adelaide is in a long standing relationship with coffee. There are some baristas and coffee pots who we feel very strong emotional attachments (dependency) towards. It’s not uncommon for an entire morning to be consumed over a cup or three and ofter and  we’ll travel a long way for something good. Like, a long way.

Debuting this weekend at a high school sports day of all places, Adelaide will welcome a mobile destination who have made a pledge to bring the good stuff to us. The People Vs Coffee will be fronted by former Abbotts & Kinney Barista Jacinta Connell and her partner. Inspired by the humble origins of her past employer, a caravan was found, a coffee machine installed and weekend will now be spent blowing off some steam from her day-job working as a lawyers with plenty of friends and caffeine.

“I’ve always worked 3 jobs at once and been a bit crazy like that,” explains Jacinta of her newfound barista/barrister role (that should make for some great business cards). “But this isn’t a job. This is being creative, doing something with my partner and my friends and it compliments my corporate career. It will help maintain my sanity!”

The People Vs Coffee
Social media has seen the business gain a massive following before a coffee has even been poured, which should help them cut through the hyper-competitive market of mobile vendors. “There are a lot of coffee carts, but not like we’re doing. We’ll do various combinations. Coffee by day, espresso martini’s by night. Appreciating the coffee is all what it’s about. The style of the van is hipster. Let’s not beat around the bush. But hipsters know coffee. There’s black there’s white, there’s wood, it’s aesthetically pleasing, it works. Especially around coffee. And martini’s.”

Yes, there will be martinis. But not from 9am in the morning sadly. Instead, you’ll have to satisfy yourself with pastries, bliss balls and the sort of coffee that will make you wish the caravan could just follow you around everywhere.

“I’m a coffee snob,” admits Jacinta. “That comes in many forms and it’s part of being a barista. You make what you feel like at the time. I drink a lot of coffee.” And we’ll all soon be drinking a lot of Jacinta’s coffee.
