Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s masterpiece The Phantom of the Opera returns to the Adelaide stage in September/October in an exciting production for the G&S Society at the Arts Theatre.
The winner of 70 major theatre awards and the longest running Broadway musical ever, The Phantom of the Opera is the musical that all other musicals are measured against.
This timeless story and unforgettable score tell the story of an undeniable obsession that could never die.
Based on the 1910 horror novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera is the thrilling and romantic account of the legendary Phantom (Adam Goodburn), a musical genius who dwells deep beneath a majestic opera house in Paris. Shunned by society for his horrible facial deformity, he takes a promising young soprano, Christine (Serena Martino-Williams), under his wing and grooms her for operatic fame, all the while falling deeply in love with her.
As Christine grows ever more successful, and a handsome young man from her past (Jared Frost) begins to successfully court her, the Phantom descends into a jealous rage and terrorizes the opera company with increasingly dangerous threats.
The production also features Kaylene Graham (Madame Giry), Monique Hapgood (Carlotta), Rod Schultz (Monsieur Firmin), David Visentin (Monsieur André), James Nicholson (Piangi), Jessica Muenchow (Meg Giry), Nicholas Munday (Monsieur Reyer), Lance Jones (Buquet), Brad Martin (Monsiur LeFevre) and a talented ensemble of performers. Assistant Director Brock Roberts and Choreographer Jamie Jewell also feature in cameos as Passarino and Don Attilio respectively.
For Musical Director Jillian Gulliver, Phantom of the Opera is one of her ‘bucket list’ shows, “It’s such a fantastic musical journey for audience, performers and musicians alike” she explains “and I am thrilled to be collaborating with the talented David Sinclair (Director)!”
The Phantom of the Opera is sure to be a visual spectacle of delight and drama and with such famous tunes as ‘Think of Me,’ ‘All I Ask of You,’ ‘The Music of the Night,’ ‘Masquerade’ and the title song, ‘The Phantom of the Opera,’ audiences will leave the theatre having enjoyed a theatrical tour de force!
