The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) is nearing the completion of it’s five-level clinical services building and 24 new mental health rehabilitation beds, that is set to redefine healthcare standards ahead of it’s unveiling by mid-2024.

The crown jewel of TQEH’s redevelopment, this five-level edifice spanning 27,000 square meters signifies a leap forward in healthcare infrastructure. Designed to replace the ageing tower building dating back to the 1950s, it promises a seamless transition of services while accommodating the needs of the Western suburbs’ expanding population.

This state-of-the-art facility heralds a new era for rehabilitation services, consolidating them from the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre into purpose-built wards within TQEH. Positioned as a frontrunner in inpatient general rehabilitation, TQEH will cater to diverse needs, from stroke recovery to amputation and burns care.

The new clinical services building boasts an array of cutting-edge amenities, including; a sprawling emergency department to handle surging demands. Expanded operating theaters, pre-operative, and recovery bays for streamlined surgical procedures. A state-of-the-art intensive care unit to provide unparalleled critical care. A larger medical imaging department equipped with the latest technology and a purpose-built general rehabilitation wards fostering holistic recovery.

The building’s design mirrors the evolving healthcare landscape and anticipates future needs. Every aspect, from admission to discharge, has been meticulously crafted to enhance the consumer experience and promote patient well-being.

The architectural blueprint prioritises sustainability, harnessing natural light and integrating outdoor spaces to create a healing environment. The space also celebrates cultural diversity, with artwork paying homage to the rich heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At the core of TQEH’s redevelopment lies a commitment to stakeholder engagement. A collaborative effort involving clinicians, support staff, patients, and the wider community has shaped every facet of the project.

Since 2018, over 250 participants have contributed their insights through planning and design workshops, ensuring that the new building caters to diverse needs and preferences. Feedback from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups has been particularly invaluable in fostering inclusivity and cultural sensitivity.

These redevelopment projects will ensure The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is able to meet the growing health and wellbeing needs of the western suburbs now and in the future.
