A brand new little bar is now open in the iconic Queens Theatre, and it’s in the same spot as the venue’s historic former bar, Shakespeare’s Tavern, dating back to 1841.
Now open every Thursday from 4pm to 11pm, as well as during performances, the Queen’s new small-scale bar will be serving both theatre-goers and Thursday night socialites. With heaps of events from live bands to musical theatre, there will be plenty of opportunities to visit and experience the brand new bar for yourself.
Located in Playhouse Lane, the iconic Queen’s Theatre is known as one of Australia’s oldest running theatres – not to mention a true Adelaide landmark.
The brand new bar revamps the theatre’s original bar, Shakespeare’s Tavern, with an ambient new vibe and a hint of Shakespeare-esque mystery. Shakespeare’s Tavern served as the theatre’s main bar in its early life, and kicked off a historic run of entertainment and world class performances.
Opening in 1841 with an inaugural performance of Shakespeare’s Othello, The Queen’s Theatre only held a handful of other productions before quickly looking to repurpose due to a host of poor reviews. The theatre went on to live several different lives as a sales yard and a market bazaar, even hosting Bowerbird market, before eventually returning to its former glory as a theatre.
Nowadays, the theatre is as active as ever, with an expansive open-plan stage space perfect for festival style performances. Showing on the 24th and 25th of August are vibrant performances of Ultimate Broadway Presented by GWB Studios of the best of Broadway including Wicked, The Phantom of the Opera and School of Rock. And, almost every Friday night sees the theatre host local Adelaide musicians and bands for intimate hidden performances in the venue’s Lounge Bar.
If you’re a bit peckish while you’re there, The Queen’s Theatre has teamed up with neighbours Sunny’s Pizza for delicious gourmet pizzas delivered straight to your table. Or if you want to host your own party, the venue is also open for private hire.
