The Return of Cocktail Hour

OnyxThe return of the cocktail hour – it’s the latest trend in after work socializing sweeping across Adelaide.

Cocktail menus are transforming our best loved and newer bars as bartenders put down their corkscrews and pick up their blenders.

No longer the domain of smoky rooms filled with lip-glossed girls with big hair and bigger shoulder pads and barmen clad in tight pants and shirts creating multi-coloured concoctions adorned with plastic swizzle sticks and paper umbrellas, cocktail hour 2013 is classy and sassy with a sophisticated style focusing on top of the range spirits and the varieties of each.

After years of imbibing and educating ourselves on wine of all varieties, taste-buds are yearning for spirits and the blends they may become.   Cocktail hour 2013 is a world of refinery.   Get ready to be overcome by the various hues of liquid, the tinkling of ice cubes against glass, and the conviviality that comes from spirits mixed.

Two of Adelaide’s newest and most popular after work cocktail sessions include Fridays on Ice and Onyx.

The very European feeling and stylish Onyx Dessert Lounge in North Adelaide has heard its patrons demand for cocktails and will open seven days a week  for both after work or pre-dinner or show cocktails with tapas style meals also on offer.  For those out later, Onyx offers the all important night cap cocktail with one of their show stopping desserts on the side!

Tasman Murray, Bar Manager of Onyx says “The cocktail menu is quickly becoming the star on the bar & eatery drink menus across Adelaide and that’s because the 2013 take on cocktails is less about flavoured syrups and 1001 different additives and more about embracing & celebrating the alcohol, while complementing & pairing it with fresh local ingredients. Cocktails are definitely the new trend and many are surprised by how perfectly a cocktail can compliment food.”

Launched late last year “Fridays on Ice” hosted by the National Wine Centre have been rapidly growing in popularity with the uptake in cocktail drinkers.   Held on the weeks between their massive Uncorked events,  “Fridays on Ice”  takes the form of a hip ‘pop up’ cocktail bar transforming the centre’s Concourse Café  into a lounge area with funky music and a feature premium spirit showcased each fortnight in a stunning and delicious range of cocktails. The Friday’s On Ice bar will have also offer full wine, cider, beer and spirit offerings, with a tapas, canapé and pizza menu available and has free entry from 4.30pm .

Cocktail hour is back and it appears it’s here to stay!
