The SA Charity event that’s helping to fight homelessness and hunger

Credit Union SA has proudly announced its support for the upcoming Soup & Sleep 2024 event, organised by South Australian charity Food on the Table.

Scheduled for this Thursday June 6th, the event aims to raise awareness and funds for the homeless communities, and will be held at Food on the Table’s headquarters in Hindmarsh.

Sponsors and the general public will sleep outdoors on cardboard to demonstrate the harsh realities of sleeping rough during a cold winter’s night.

Now in its fourth year, Soup & Sleep will feature an evening filled with nutritious meals prepared by local chefs and volunteers that aim to address immediate food needs for those struggling with homelessness and starvation.

There will be entertainment by local performers and shared personal stories from individuals who have themselves battled homelessness.

“To hear that 7,000 people in our state are estimated to experience homelessness every night is alarming,” Credit Union SA CEO Todd Roberts said.

“So many of us take for granted the simple basics of nourishing food on a table and a safe home to sleep in.

“In the last 12 months, we’ve heard how hard it is for many people with the cost of living going up, the rental market being so hard to get into and more people sacrificing food to keep a roof over their head.

“Supporting Food on the Table at the Soup & Sleep event is important to me and our team at Credit Union SA. It’s a powerful reminder of the influence we have in our community when we’re united.”

Food on the Table has significantly impacted the local community, having provided over 90,000 meals. With a weekly distribution of approximately 2,000 meals, their work spans across different partnership organisations that help many vulnerable groups.

In preparation for the Soup & Sleep event, Credit Union SA has also organised fundraising initiatives, including soup events throughout May, to involve 150 staff members in supporting the cause.

The event not only aims to provide immediate support through meals, but also to generate greater public empathy and understanding of the harsh conditions faced by homeless individuals.
