South Australia. Our gorgeous state is known for its stunning beaches, delicious frog cakes and of course our beautiful wineries.
After a year-long tasting of more than 10,000 wines, the results of The Real Review Top Wineries of Australia have been revealed and one thing is for certain.
South Australia is dominating the wine-scene.
Out of the extensive review of 344 wineries, SA achieved the most spots in the top 10:
- Penfolds (#3)
- Eisenstone (#4)
- Wendouree (#6)
- Hardys (#7)
- Henschke (#10).
In fact, 38% of the wineries on the 344 strong list were South Australian.
The Real Review is the most prestigious wine review panel across the country, with the entire list only including 15% of Australian wineries, as acknowledged by the Real Review’s Principal Wine Writer and leading Australian wine critic, Huon Hooke.
“The Top Wineries of Australia 2023 is the best of the best in Australian wine. Wineries of all scale feature at the top, emphasising that the quality of the wine alone defines a winery’s placement on this ranking,” Huon said.
The Top 10 ‘Top Wineries’ in Australia make up a vast array of regions and wine styles – giving wine lovers plenty of diversity to fill their glasses with.
South Australia’s own Penfolds Winery, took third place in the Real Review’s top-rated wines with it’s Penfolds Grange 2018, going for $1000 for a 750ml bottle.

Big movers in this year’s ranking include Eisenstone Wines in Tanunda, which ranked #238 in 2022 and now sits just behind Penfolds at #4.
“Eisenstone is one of the most exciting new wineries to emerge in the last few years. Stephen Cook has a laser-sharp focus on producing mind-blowing shiraz, and what a line-up he’s released with the 2020 collection,” Hooke said.
Also showcasing a big leap into the ranks is Adelaide Hills’ Murdoch Hill, which moved from 195 to #41.
Awarded this year’s coveted Winery of the Year title is 45-year-old Yarra Valley producer Oakridge Wines, bounding to the top of the ranking after appearing at #18 in 2022. This is the third year running that a Victorian winery has taken out the Winery of the Year title, with Yarra Yering taking the title in 2021 and Wine by Farr in 2022.
