From Wednesday to Friday this week, the Seinfeld-themed New York-style pizza bar, Cosmo’s, is hosting a Soup Nazi pop-up out of its Hindley Street Music Hall digs.
Cosmo’s has quickly become one of the West End’s go-to spots for a proper New York slice. They’ve earned a cult following for their pizzas and for being a fun location right in the middle of Hindley Street. Pizza isn’t the only New York-inspired offering that owner Josh Bartolo is passionate about. He’s also a massive Seinfeld fan. So naturally, the worlds of soup and sitcom had to come together at some point.
For those unfamiliar with the iconic 90s sitcom reference, the Soup Nazi is a character based on a real-life, very eccentric, hyper-particular soup stall owner from the streets of New York. The character is famous for his strict ordering etiquette and the phrase no Seinfeld fan can forget, “No soup for you!”
“The Soup Nazi isn’t just a funny character, but one who I think hospitality owners can secretly relate to,” says Josh.
“His passion for his food is what leads to it being such high quality – so when a customer can’t respect that, any passionate owner can relate to his frustration.”
At the pop-up, you’ll find a great lineup of iconic soups, with options to grab and go from the street-facing window or sit inside for the full Seinfeld-style experience. On the menu there’s Jambalaya and Mulligatawny, two soups famously featured in the show, plus a few classic veg options.
“We are doing a Jambalaya and a Mulligatawny, which the show popularises, plus a couple of vegetable
options. We’re going to open up the windows so people can walk up and grab a takeaway bowl or obviously, people can come and enjoy inside.
“We’ve really felt the love of the Seinfeld community here, and whilst our main goal is always to make the best New York style pizza, what’s the point of having a Seinfeld-themed bar if you can’t have some fun with it?”
While this is Cosmo’s first full-blown Seinfeld dining moment, it definitely won’t be the last. Josh and the team have lots planned, including a ‘Make Your Own Pie Night’ and a monthly Seinfeld-themed trivia night.
