Accommodation

Inside Maldhi, the immersive Eyre Peninsula tiny home purpose built around the night sky

Perched beside the rugged shores of Sleaford Bay, this secluded tiny home pairs sweeping ocean views with whale watching, a fire pit, and an indoor two-person shower.

Back in 2022, Eyre Way launched its first stay just 25 minutes from Port Lincoln, helping set the tone for South Australia’s growing tiny-home scene. Since then, the eco-tourism accommodation start-up has expanded to three stays in total, Yambara, Bandari and Maldhi, each offering its own secluded take on slowing down in nature.

When was the last time you got out of the house and spent some quality time in the great outdoors? I’d be willing to bet it’s been a while.

There’s no shortage of scenic, private destinations to explore across South Australia, and Eyre Way’s Maldhi cabin is right up there with the top picks. Maldhi, a Barngarla word meaning ‘night sky’, is a chic, cosy tiny home perched on the vast shores of Sleaford Bay. Out your window, hardy native bushes flourish in the breeze, epic south coast cliffs frame the view, and immense Southern Ocean waves foam into shore. All around you, the sea breeze rolls across the boundless white sands of Port Lincoln National Park.

There’s a reason tiny homes like these are having their moment. Maldhi, in particular brings bespoke, earthy tones, luxurious bedding and a breakfast bar you’ll find yourself sitting at and gazing out well beyond your first meal of the day.

But what these ingeniously designed spaces do best is provide all the creature comforts you’re delighted to luxuriate in, without any of the solely functional features that mean you’re just continuing the daily grind. Accommodation like Maldhi tricks you into really switching off.

Inside, Maldhi is compact in all the right ways, sleeping up to four across a king bed and a cosy double in the mezzanine, with every detail carefully considered so the small footprint makes the absolute best use of the space. There’s a fully equipped kitchen with a gas cooktop and bar fridge, plus I Love Linen bedding, towels, a flushing toilet, and reverse-cycle air conditioning. One of its best features, though, is a deluxe indoor shower for two.

Step outside and the experience stretches even further, with outdoor decking, seating, a fire pit and cooking equipment ready for when the starry nights roll in. It’s all powered by a solar and battery system, with lights, power points and instant gas hot water.

What makes Maldhi feel especially clever is that it doesn’t ask you to choose between comfort and the wildness around it. You’re only 100 metres from a raw, rugged stretch of coastline known for whale spotting, with kangaroos, emus, dolphins and birdlife all part of the surrounding landscape. Humpbacks and Southern Right whales are often seen through Sleaford Bay, with Blue Whales and even Orcas sighted in the broader area, making the outlook feel properly alive.

If you want to lean even further into the slow-stay experience, Eyre Way also offers Nourish and Wellness add-on packages, giving guests the option to make the getaway feel even more like a proper reset.

Really though, Maldhi’s appeal is simplistic. It gives you the rare chance to wake up beside one of South Australia’s most dramatic coastal landscapes, drink in the view from a king-sized bed, wander the deck as the ocean rolls in, and spend a night under the very sky it was named after. It’s small in footprint, but big on everything you actually came for.
