The UBET Adelaide Cup Announces Sparkling New Official Drink

Get your sparkle on at the Adelaide Cup this long weekend….

In the tradition of major race days around the world, race-goers at this year’s UBET Adelaide Cup (see our full guide here) will be able to ‘cheers’ with the official drink – ‘The Sparkling Rose’ – to be launched at the race on 14 March.

Capturing the essence of red (official colour) and the red rose (official flower), The Sparkling Rose will be made of Wolf Blass Eaglehawk sparkling, fresh rosewater, Crème de Cassis, and a dash of raspberry, to create a flavour similar to Turkish delight. We’ll take four glasses, please!

South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) Chief Executive Officer Brenton Wilkinson said many marquee horse races and tracks have signature cocktails such as the Mint Julep served at the Kentucky Derby, the Black-Eyed Susan of the Preakness Stakes in Maryland, and the bourbon-based Belmont Jewel for the Belmont Stakes.

“With the Cup’s official flower being the red rose and the colour red sharing a long association with SAJC and Morphettville Racecourse, it was fitting that the drink of SA’s premier race event incorporate both,” he said.

“The Sparkling Rose will be available to race-goers at all bars around Morphettville Racecourse for $10.”

Mr Wilkinson said a horse named ‘Red Gauntlet’, owned by the Honourable Thomas Elder, who was a key figure in establishing the racecourse, won the very first race at Morphettville in September 1875.

“It is one of the reasons for red being the primary colour in the branding of the SAJC and Morphettville Racecourse,” he said.

“At the same time roses, in particular red roses, have been a prominent feature of the gardens at Morphettville Racecourse throughout its history.”

Race-goers are encouraged to build the red rose into fascinators, corsages or lapel accessories on the day.

The UBET Adelaide Cup will be held on Monday 14 March 2015 and the race is again expected to attract some of Australia’s best stayers vying for the $400,000 prize money on offer.

General Admission tickets to the 2016 UBET Adelaide Cup are $25 for adults, $15 for concessions and persons aged between 14-17 years and the event is free for children 13 and under.
