This June long weekend, Festival Plaza will be transformed into the ultimate playground pop-up, with the introduction of The Wild Weekend. This is a nature play event for kids of all ages, bringing together interactive and exploratory play, no matter the weather.
Taking place from Saturday, June 7th to Monday, June 9th, this event will have a bunch of engaging, creative, and physical outdoor activities. The best part? Entry is completely free.
The Wild Weekend is an initiative by Climbing Tree Creations, an award-winning local creative group known for their specialised nature-based installations. The team is celebrated for their contributions at a few of Adelaide’s major events, including WOMADelaide’s KidZone and the Royal Adelaide Show’s Nature Village. Their expansive portfolio also includes numerous nature playground projects throughout Australia.
“The Wild Weekend is all about encouraging kids to play outdoors in winter, using their imagination in an immersive nature space that allows them to discover, think, move, and imagine,” shared Simon Hutchinson, Director of Climbing Tree.
“Just because the weather might be a little wild doesn’t mean kids can’t let their adventurous spirit run free! For us at Climbing Tree, there’s no such thing as bad weather — only bad clothing. We can’t wait to see little explorers rugged up and ready to play this long weekend.”
The activities planned for The Wild Weekend have been made to engage children in both fun and learning. Some of the standout features include Climbing Tree’s signature Woven Pods, which have previously been showcased at WOMADelaide KidZone and the Royal Adelaide Show. The lineup also features a Fairy House, a Cubby Building Activity, Junk Loose Parts Play, and a Wishing Tree. These activities encourage children to use their creativity and physical skills, promoting mental and physical development through play.
