Theatre Review: After Dinner

Presented by: Noarlunga Theatre Company

Written by Andrew Bovell, with debut direction by Samara Gambling, After Dinner is presented by Noarlunga Theatre Company. It is Bovell’s first play, and his only comedy.

The plot is not particularly eventful as it centres on the discussions of two different groups on a Friday night out. With little movement of performers throughout, the stage props are the two tables upon which the actors are seated.

Unknown to each other in the beginning, each group has come to have dinner, drink, and see a live band together. It is 1987. The five characters all have lonely hearts and hold differing views on friendship, sex, marriage, emotional communication, and life. Although on a surface level this makes the comedy sound simple, there are some unexpected turns that are decidedly amusing. These, in addition to the candid revelations of the vexed characters, create the banter in this play.

Well cast, it is both the skill and casting of the actors that make the interactions entertaining. Each of the five performers has perfected their character to mirror the distinct personalities required of the script. This can be seen in their attire, facial expressions, mannerisms, voice projection, and their posture. Even seated near the rear of the audience, there was no broken view, and the stage was well lit to allow for noticing these qualities.

Really easy to watch, it is the kind or production that makes for great entertainment. Imagine this show as being comparable to an episode of Friends that you are watching live. It covers some serious themes in a light-hearted, casual way and as such, makes for a wonderful, relaxed night out. It is designed for a mature audience, as it discusses sexual themes.
