Theatre Review: Especially On Birthdays

Simply stunning

Presented by The PaperBoats

The Goodwood theatre has reopened and we couldn’t be happier. With the new owners being on hand to greet everyone, it is a joy to be able to share the moment with excited families. As we entered the theatre we were delighted to be directed to the stage stairs – sit on the stage?! Okay! What a novel experience. The audience sat along the front and back of the stage creating an intimate space for the two performers. Piles of plain receipt paper formed a parameter that the children instinctively knew not to cross.

As the show begins, we are introduced to a set of twins (played by performers Temeka Lawlor and Tim Mackie), who are about to celebrate their sixth birthday. One of the twins is very excited whilst the other is apprehensive about what turning 6 will bring. As the show progresses, we learn that the plain receipt rolls feature throughout the performance and are a very effective prop. With little dialogue the audience relies on the props and the twins’ body language to navigate this journey and what it means for their future both individually and together.

The production is beautiful in its simplicity and even the youngest audience member at 3 months of age was mesmerised from start to finish. Especially On Birthdays is a perfect example of the brilliant minds at The PaperBoats,  and whilst listed as a performance for early childhood audiences as adults we found it wonderful to watch as well.
