You start with a very clever, relatable script, add a good director and an accomplished cast and you have a funny refreshing piece of theatre. Set in Italy in 2019 just before the dreaded lockdowns, a suburban couple is eager to escape on an adventure before they were too old or frail to try — ‘adventure before the dementia’ as the narrator Adrian puts it. Their plans go awry when their intended companions have to cancel and they go with their new next-door neighbours, who they are not sure they like.

Roger Hill’s script is full of wry comedy, comic situations, and a little bit reflective in places. The Therry set works well to create familiar landmarks and the supporting cast adds colour to the scenes. Sam Wiseman and Rose Harvey pop in and out as various characters: travel agent, gondolier, waiters and security guard.

Adrian, played by Lindsay Dunn is every inch the retired librarian who has become insular and lost his love of life. Both he and his librarian wife Alison have spent years looking after their daughter and are at a loss after her death. Sue Wylie gives this character a slight edge which shows all is not well with their marriage. Dunn and Wylie are both very experienced and their chemistry anchors the play.

The neighbours, played by Frank Cwiertniak and Anita Zamberian Canala are newly retired, confident and comfortable financially. The librarians are used to watching their pennies and cutting costs but Harry with his plumbing business and second wife, Judy doesn’t consider how expensive something is. Cwiertniak is perfect as the no-nonsense Harry unaware of his thoughtlessness. Canala gives a balanced performance as Judy, who tries valiantly to keep the peace.

So much of this play is relevant and examines how we treat those around us, even those closest. The couples discover that all is not always as it seems. They learn to bridge the gap of differing backgrounds and politics and move to a resolution that, though tinged with sadness, leads to forgiveness and ends well.

Therry has again found a winner, make sure you get your tickets, don’t miss this warm and amusing comedy.
