Theatre Review: Gazillion Bubble Show

A gazillion bubbles are what we are promised and a gazillion bubbles is what we get in this incredibly mind-blowing family fun show.

When we are young, most of us are mesmerised by bubbles: looking at them; blowing them; and the most fun of all, bursting them. Who would think though that there would be a job and extreme family entertainment in the field of bubbles and bubble blowing? Answer – the Yang family.

They have made the art and science of bubble making their life’s work. Daughter Melody Yang is the presenter of this particular version of the Gazillion Bubble Show and certainly knows her stuff having spent 21 of her 25 years working with bubbles The Yangs have invented their own bubble formula which doesn’t have that soapy smell or quality to it that all others seem to have. Instead it tends to smell of talc and apples and has a beautifully crystal clear glass like quality to the final appearance.

It’s almost impossible to review a show such as this, so let’s just say that bubbles are what you ask for and bubbles are what you get: bubbles in bubbles; bubbles on bubbles; bubbles on bubbles that are in bubbles; children in bubbles (don’t worry mu and dad, you get them back!); smoke-filled bubbles; and the Adelaide Festival Theatre stage AND auditorium literally filled to the brim with bubbles. And if that is not enough, the whole show is topped off with the most spectacular laser light show ever!

The sound quality from Ms Yang’s mic was slurry and muffled, but in the big picture, who cares – this is a visual treat and not necessarily an aural one.

Brilliant family fun!!
