An unusual early “flop” for Stephen Sondheim, Merrily We Roll Along didn’t gather momentum till nearly 20 years after its initial opening in 1981. Not one of the more regularly performed works in the Sondheim canon, it is delightful to see our own G&S Society tackle a lesser-known work.
Merrily tells the story of Frank, Charley, and Mary, over the course of 20 years and the gradual disintegration of their close friendship. But the story is told chronologically backwards. Ending the story with youthful enthusiasm would, you might think, lend the narrative a sense of optimism. Instead, it elevates the poignancy. And through it all, of course, we have the music. Numbers which many people would recognise include Old Friends, Good Thing Going, and the eponymous number Merrily We Roll Along. But this whole work is chock-full of those unmistakable Sondheim touches of magic.
Matt Smith has directed this production, doing a generally great job of some difficult staging, other than a few stilted bits of blocking. Lucy Newman’s choreographing is outstanding and a constant joy to the eye.
Starring as Frank is Nicholas Munday who delivers some fine singing. Charley is played by Deon Martino-Williams, whose characterisation and vocals are Tony-worthy. Mary is embodied heart and soul by the wonderful Serena Cann, who has an unmistakable stage presence. Rounding out the core cast are Bec Pynor, Danielle Greaves, and Ryan Ricci, all of whom bring their A-game to the characters of Gussie, Beth, and Joe, respectively. The ensemble members take on various cameo roles, as well as providing a sensational chorus. Their energy and warmth shone out on opening night. The orchestra, under the Musical Direction of Matthew Rumley, was tight and energetic, working with the singers, rather than battling them. Special mention to Daniel Brunner on keys who also provided “Frank” with his piano-playing.
Adelaide’s G&S Society goes from strength to strength, producing shows of an extraordinarily high calibre. And not just in terms of non-professional theatre. Some of their productions easily beat those of professional companies, and Merrily We Roll Along is certainly one of those.
