In the biographical musical, The Boy From Oz, following the life of Australian showbiz legend Peter Allen, there is a wonderful line: “You will tell your life like a story, and it will be a real adventure.” There is no question about it, Peter Allen’s music is rich with storytelling, and he has the ability to create such wonderful imagery through his lyrics.

On Friday 25 November, Adelaide’s own cabaret and musical theatre performer, Michael Griffiths, performed a new cabaret work that celebrates the life and music of Peter Allen. Michael has a wonderful ability to take his audiences on a journey with him, and this cabaret is no different. Running at just over 2 hours (with an interval), Michael packed in hit after hit of Allan’s music. Not only were we treated to tunes we all know and love, but Michael also performed several lesser-known pieces that should really become just as well known as classics such as Tenterfield Saddler, I Still Call Australia Home, and I Go To Rio.

Michael’s musicianship skills are exemplary. He is a wonderful singer, a brilliant pianist and has exceptional showmanship skills.  Between each number, he wove stories about Peter’s life, his own life and shared some crossovers between both of their careers. Michael has the ability to have you laughing one minute and the next he’s tugging at your heart strings with a powerful ballad.

Michael was backed by his wonderful band featuring Felicity Freeman on bass, Steve Leske on drum kit, and Emile Ryjoch on tenor saxophone, alto saxophone and clarinet. Along with Michael on piano, these fine musicians had the audience dancing by the final encore, I Go To Rio.

Sadly, this was the only performance of Michael Griffiths Sings Peter Allen. However, promoter Markus Hamence is bringing Michael back on Sunday 11 December at 6pm for Michael Griffiths – A Jazzy Christmas at Auchendarroch House. Further information and tickets for this can be found at https://markushamence.com/shows-and-events/ .

Michael Griffiths has certainly made his mark in the Australian cabaret scene. If you ever get the chance to book tickets to see him, you won’t be disappointed.
