Bring together three legends who are masters of the comic monologue, and you get a show that is definitely worth a visit! These polished performers did not disappoint, bringing their variety of weird and wonderful characters to the stage at the Dunstan Playhouse. The script, written by Angus FitzSimons, who also directed the show, was clever, giving each actor a chance to shine. Played on an almost bare stage, the comedy relied on their talents.
Each of the performers gave us three monologues each. John Wood read us some bush poetry, wielded a gavel while listing some hilarious auction items, and gave evidence in ‘police speak’ on an interesting occurrence. All were well received by the audience but Wood got the biggest reaction when he appeared in police uniform.
Emily Taheny took us all back to school in her headmistress address with much merriment, and then completely changed when she returned as a hippy meditation mentor. Her third speech as the Mother of the Bride was simply splendid and very funny.
With an informative and slightly ridiculous voiceover by Angus FitzSimons, Max Gillies, as our conductor, demonstrated the many interesting parts of the orchestra. He also asked questions, many of them unanswered, in a contemplative sermon. In his final appearance he took us on a tour of the art gallery and shared his many amusing insights.
The total performance was a delight, which was further enhanced by the hilarious program full of more amusement. A pleasant evening’s entertainment.
