Matt Byrne Media has got religion! The Little Sisters of Hoboken have taken over Holden Street Theatres with this funny show written by Dan Goggin. In the guise of a fund-raising concert to raise money to bury their unfortunate sisters, the nuns take any excuse to take the spotlight. On a simple set, in costumes by Anne Williams exercising her habit to make habits that stay on despite the hysterical actions of the cast. Choreography by Rose Vallen shows off the varying talents of the assembly with a spirited tap number and a strange ballet.
Trying to keep control of the concert, David Gauci is great as Sister Mary Regina aided and abetted by Sister Mary Hubert (Matt Byrne) with his nun jokes. Sister Mary Amnesia (Rob Abelita) raises her voice to God (at unusually high levels) whilst searching for her memory. Sister Robert Anne (Chris Stansfield) is looking for stardom with his turn in the spotlight and Sister Mary Leo (Jayke Melling) wants to worship through dance! All of this merriment is very ably accompanied by Sister Billy Fields (Ben Saunders) on the keyboards.
With great numbers like Nunsense Is Habit Forming, Tackle That Temptation With A Time-Step, We’ve Got To Clean Out The Freezer, I Could’ve Gone To Nashville and Holies Than Thou, how could this show fail? Add some very corny jokes (and of course men with habits), and you have fun show, so my suggestion is get yourselves to Holden Street and join the Little Sisters in getting religion.
