Renowned German puppet company Thalias Kompagnon’s production of Hans Christian Anderson’s Steadfast Tin Soldier, as devised and performed by Joachim Torbahn, is truly and utterly delightful.

Performer, puppeteer and extremely talented artist Torbahn delivers Anderson’s age-old children’s tale of courage, determination and love in a wonderfully unique way – by painting the story.

Using a large screen positioned on a larger than normal easel, rubber stamps, various rollers and brushes, a myriad collection of paints, and a soundtrack that matches whatever piece of the story is being told at the time, the bubbly, very personable Torbahn mesmerises young and old alike with his clever and imaginative presentation.

There is a surprise with every brush stroke – and the audience are encouraged at the end of the production to go home and play with paint.

This is a show that any lover of good stories needs to see. If you love the Anderson tale, you will adore this production: if you have never heard the tale before, I’m sure that you will want to discover more (and perhaps take up painting).
