Charmaine Jones has put together a feast of music with many differing sections, showcasing much talent that has been nurtured and encouraged by her efforts. The students range in age from 4-75 years and all enjoyed the performance. Jones, like many musicians is glad to be back bringing music to live audiences after such a trying time.
The show began with a duet from Jones and daughter Ezriella singing Someone to Watch Over Me, beautifully delivered. This was followed by the Gospo Collective giving a rendition of Taking a Chance on Love. Each of the transfers to different groups were smooth when leaving and entering the stage in a confined area. The various groups all showed enthusiasm and contained many soloists given their chance to display the many vocal talents.
A solo version by Charmaine of Fats Waller’s Honeysuckle Rose preceded the Jones Juniors(4-11) giving their all with Georgia, Summertime and Fascinating Rhythm. These young performers were a joy to watch, as were the Tots(the younger members of that group) a little later with Hungry Caterpillar .The Jones Commentary (17+years) joined Charmaine for Swing Low Sweet Chariot and then gave their version of Georgia.
After some Cole Porter by the Jones Chorus (12-16) it was time to try a little Latin music: Desafinado followed by a “Brazil Medley”. The older group were joined by the Jones Chorus to deliver a mash-up of Thought it Was You and Looking for Another Pure Love with some great harmonies. The Sam Smith song Lay By Your Side, underscored with Beauty and the Beast was a highlight bringing the many parts of this choir together and closing with a small group singing In The Wee Small Hours of the Moring.
Vocally I would not fault this group with its many facets and the simple choreography they were able to execute in the confined space was effective, but I missed the showmanship that could be achieved in a larger venue.
It was a fun night, obviously enjoyed by the varied audience.
