Theatre Review: The Vicar Of Dibley

Presented by: Tea Tree Players
Reviewed: 12 October, 2022

Not surprisingly, the Tea Tree Players’ season of The Vicar Of Dibley is sold out. I say ‘not surprisingly’, because this is the kind of show that fans of Tea Tree Players Theatre adores. As a company who regularly writes their own material, it’s uncanny just how well this play suits them. It’s as if it was written just for them.

Based on the much-loved and hugely successful BBC show of the same name, the characters are as unique as they are hilarious. The Tea Tree Players cast have done an excellent job of bringing these characters to life on the stage. Their portrayals are faithful to the originals without being poorly executed mimicry.

Originally from the genius comedy mind of Richard Curtis and his co-writer Paul Mayhew-Archer, the concept has been re-jigged and adapted into a live theatre performance. The laughs are aplenty, and the cast must feel quite fortunate to be handed such an hilarious script to work with.

Lesley Main (The Vicar), Katie Packer (Alice), and Tim Cousins (Jim) absolutely nail the characterisations. It was very easy to forget that they aren’t the original actors that made the roles famous.

The set was quite good, and the audio and lighting had no errors worth mentioning. Robert Andrews’ direction is excellent, although I suspect he had it easy with a talented cast who loved their roles.

The season sold out before it even opened I’m told, which is a testament to the quality of show this company puts on and the reputation they have garnered over the last 46 years. A true gem in the Adelaide amateur theatre world.

Fear not though, the Tea tree Players do have one more show for 2022. Lookout for their Nov/Dec pantomime, Jack & The Beanstalk. It’s bound to be a great production that promises to be more than just a show for kids.
