Thebarton Aquatic Centre reopens this week with $8.7m renovation and new learning spaces

The newly renovated Thebarton Aquatic Centre is reopening on July 15 with modern facilities, enhanced safety features, and expanded educational opportunities.

The Thebarton Aquatic Centre is set to reopen its doors on Monday, 15 July, after completing an expansive $8.7 million refurbishment. The improvement project has modernised the facility extensively, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The key modifications include upgraded swimming pools complemented by a redeveloped concourse surrounding the pool areas. Noteworthy additions are a new wet deck for the 25-metre pool, slip-resistant tiles, enhanced drainage systems, and a newly installed inclusive ramp leading into the main pool. The structural enhancements also extend to new walls, a roof, and fresh coats of paint, which not only elevate the facility’s appearance but also extend its longevity.

In an effort to improve user convenience, the changing rooms have been entirely reconstructed, now offering 50% more toilets and shower facilities than before. Also new are a lifeguard office and a first aid room, strategically positioned to provide direct and unimpeded views of and access to the pool deck, thereby enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

The refurbishment plan also included the creation of two new multipurpose spaces, designed to serve as venues for presentations and other events. These areas are equipped to facilitate water safety instruction in partnership with Thebarton Senior College, the Department for Education, and various local learning programs. Additionally, the Department for Education has contributed new equipment aimed at supporting personalised water safety and disability support, along with overall workplace health and safety, which includes a new defibrillator.

The facility will now be managed by YMCA South Australia, a leading provider of aquatic facility management and school-based water safety programs. YMCA operates several other notable venues across South Australia, ensuring a wealth of experience in community-based aquatic services.

Following the upgrades, the Thebarton Aquatic Centre is poised to serve a broader educational purpose. With initial Learn to Swim classes and school bookings already scheduled to commence within weeks of reopening, the facility has introduced substantial enhancements to support the Department for Education’s Water Safety program. This initiative is pivotal in nurturing children’s water confidence and skills across diverse water environments, fostering an overall active and healthy lifestyle.

Tom Koutsantonis, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, spoke about the reopening, noting the importance of the centre to various community groups and educational programs. “It’s fantastic to see the Thebarton Aquatic Centre reopen with a fresh new look to welcome back the thousands of people who visit the centre each week… We anticipate that the Thebarton pool program will once again be at capacity with the upgraded facilities enabling an expansion of educational opportunities in this great new learning environment,” he stated.

David Paterson, Chief Executive of YMCA said they were “absolutely delighted to have been asked to activate the newly refurbished Thebarton Aquatic Centre,” also highlighting the synergy between YMCA’s community-focused mission and the centre’s service offerings.
