They Say It’s Wonderful – 2012 Cabaret Fringe

Presented by The Bailey Dolls
Reviewed Sunday 24 June 2012

The Bailey Dolls are Rita, Betty and Edie, performing an Andrew Sisters tribute with a bit of Sondheim and Cole Porter thrown in. Between sets, their romances and hopes are exposed backstage in this short, fun show filled with the hits of yesteryear.

Performers Merrilyn Greer, Leah Potter and Tahlia Ries belt out the memories including Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree, Rum and Coca Cola, Mad About the Boy and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. Their fine voices capture the sound and the spirit of the era, backed by a great three piece band.

Unfortunately, Rita struggles noticeably with the basic dance steps and the transitions between on-stage and off are unimaginative dead spots in the show. These lows are more than compensated for by the toe-tapping enjoyment of the tunes however. More music and less narrative would have left people saying "it’s wonderful".
