The SA Government is encouraging families to practice their cycling skills and learn about road safety at the free Think! Road Safety Family Day today in the heart of the CBD before the Santos Tour Down Under kicks off.
In collaboration with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, under the THINK! Road Safety Partnerships program, the SA Police Road Safety Centre will host a day of family fun from 1pm today, offering children the chance to ride on the mock roadway and gain confidence on their bike, while learning about road rules and cycling safety.
The mock roadway includes traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and a roundabout, helping children become familiar with road signage and rules in a controlled, enclosed space away from cars and traffic.
Children can bring their own bikes or scooters, or there will be bikes available to borrow – including some accessibility friendly options.
SA Police and Think! Road Safety representatives will be on hand to help kids of all ages to Think! Road Safety, encouraging everyone to share the road and look out for more vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
With giveaways for kids and appearances from Jeff the Road Safety Dog, this free event is the perfect lead up to the start of cycling action with the Santos Tour Down Under efex Prologue winding around Adelaide’s city streets from 6pm.
The SA Police Road Safety Centre is just a short walk along North Terrace or from the Thebarton tram stop, or an easy ride from Adelaide Railway Station.
No bookings or tickets are required.
Minister for Police Joe Szkacs stressed the importance of providing safe opportunities for the next generation to learn how to be responsible and considerate road users.
“Whether you bring your own bike or borrow one on the day, the FREE Think! Road Safety Family Day welcomes all to come and practice riding in a safe environment while learning about road rules and cycling safety at the much-loved Road Safety Centre” he said.
“With this time of year always inspiring regular and more casual cyclists to get on their bike, please Think! Road Safety and always take extra care to be mindful of cyclists, particularly if you are overtaking, on country roads or in busy festival areas in the city or at stages around the state.”
