This New Initiative Will Help South Australian Teens Get Their Licence Faster

A new $350,000 program launched this week will help young South Australians overcome common challenges to get their driver’s licence and become more independent.

There’s no hiding the fact that owning a car doesn’t come cheap, nor the process of attaining a driver’s licence, especially for a high school student.

Well good news for young South Australians – launching today, a new joint initiative ‘Licence to Work’, will grant $350,000 between 90 students to help them overcome common challenges to get their driver’s license and become more independent.

Commencing in January 2019, the program will provide students with fully funded driving lessons with qualified RAA driving instructors, including the full 75 hours of supervised driving required for learner drivers to progress to their P-licence.

The three-year partnership between RAA, Western Futures, Anglicare SA and the Lions Club of Richmond will be initially rolled out to the lucky students in the western suburbs at Seaton High, Findon High and Le Fevre High.

RAA Senior Manager Community Engagement, Ben Haythorpe says, “Getting your driver’s licence is much more demanding than it used to be, which is great in terms of driver training and safety, but it can also present a barrier for young people.”

“For students, the Licence to Work program will encourage improved engagement and commitment to their schooling, while ultimately leading to greater independence and employability once they have their P-licences.”

Today’s launch of the Licence to Work initiative follows the successful Driver Education Scholarship pilot program conducted earlier this year between RAA and Western Futures. Eighteen students from Seaton High are taking part in the pilot program, with nine already obtaining their P-licences.
