Whyalla’s iconic winter festival, CuttleFest, returns this June and July for unique coastal experiences with fascinating marine life. The festival, which shines a spotlight on Australian Giant Cuttlefish, takes place during the annual migration of the species, which congregates for breeding in Whyalla, the only known location where this happens in the world.

Related to octopus, squid and nautilus, these highly intelligent creatures are one of the largest species of cuttlefish, weighing up to 5kg and reaching up to 60cm in length, and can change their colour, shape and texture to evade predators.

Ten of thousands of these intelligent invertebrates can be viewed and appreciated via various channels both underwater and on land, with the festival attracting hordes of locals and tourists each year. To get up close and personal with the cuttlefish, you can participate in guided snorkeling and diving experiences led by local experts, watching spectacular underwater light shows and colourful displays from these chameleons of the sea.

If you’d prefer to stay warm and dry, glass bottom boat tours and virtual reality experiences are brilliant viewing alternatives. A highlight of the event is the Salty ‘Sea’esta on June 6, a free family-friendly event featuring market stalls, roving performers, plenty of food and beverage vendors, and interactive entertainment for all ages.

Bringing the kids? There’s plenty for youngsters to do and enjoy, with Sparkles the Cuttlefish offering a truly unique learning experience with fun-filled story-telling in an exciting setting. Also on the agenda are Seek and Find adventures around the library, a slime-making workshop, and the opportunity to decorate biscuits and create sea-themed treats.
