South Australians have wasted no time securing a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of the state’s most impressive new police facilities, with more than 6,000 free tickets snapped up for the upcoming Gepps Cross barracks Open Day.
Taking place this Sunday, the sold-out event will be the first time the public is invited inside the new $93 million complex, offering a unique opportunity to experience the cutting-edge home of South Australia Police Mounted Operations, Dog Operations and the Band of the South Australia Police.
The purpose-built facility officially opened earlier this year. This major investment in modern policing infrastructure was designed with functionality and animal welfare in mind. The site features 32 stables, spacious paddocks and an undercover arena, allowing police horses to train year-round in all conditions.
The barracks also include specialised Dog Operations facilities, with 15 kennels and dedicated training areas for highly skilled police dogs. These teams play a critical role across the state, assisting with everything from detecting drugs, explosives and firearms to locating missing persons and supporting frontline officers in high-risk situations.
Sunday’s Open Day has a packed program, giving visitors an up close look at the incredible work carried out by SAPOL teams every day. Alongside meeting the much-loved police horses and dogs, attendees will be able to explore a range of specialist vehicles and operational equipment.
Expect everything from the STAR Operations BearCat to water and traffic vehicles, plus a police motorbike, boat and even a jet ski on display. A number of community and support organisations will also be part of the day, including Neighbourhood Watch, Police Legacy, the Police Historical Society and Retired Police Dogs of SA.
“The Malinauskas Government worked closely with SAPOL to deliver this fantastic new, purpose-built home for the police greys and dogs,” shared Minister for Police Michael Brown. “We have invested in specialist facilities to ensure our police have a modern workplace that better supports them to keep our community safe and it is incredible to see the enthusiasm from South Australians who are excited to see it.”
The Open Day will run across two sessions, from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm, with tickets required for entry, though if you missed out, you’re not alone. The overwhelming demand highlights just how eager South Australians are to connect with their local police and see firsthand the facilities supporting community safety.
