Thousands to join Adelaide University as enrolments open statewide

Over $400 million invested to unite academic strengths and boost local education by 2026.

Adelaide hits a historic moment today, as Adelaide University opens enrolments for the first set of courses since the merger of the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. It marks one of the most significant milestones yet in the SA Government’s once-in-a-generation plan to reshape higher education across the state.

From 9am this morning, online students and those beginning summer school will be the first to secure their place in the new institution. Enrolments will then roll out in carefully staged steps until 12 December, concluding with the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at 1pm on the final day.

Current students from both legacy universities, along with new applicants who received offers in October and November, are eligible to enrol during this phase. Students receiving their SATAC-issued offers on 15 January 2026, including graduates of the 2025 SACE cohort, will soon receive details about their specific enrolment windows via the university’s myEnrolment portal.

With more than $400 million invested by the State Government, Adelaide University is expected to welcome the largest domestic student body in the country when it officially opens in 2026. Projections show more than 70,000 students will be studying across the institution by 2034, underscoring the scale of the transformation.

Information about the enrolment process and the full timetable is available via Adelaide University’s official channels.

Reflecting on the milestone, Minister Joe Szakacs said, “This is a massive milestone. Our Government has worked tirelessly to realise this once-in-a-generation opportunity and deliver for the future of our state’s economy and for South Australian students.”

He added that it’s been a “monumental effort” to reach this point, and that the first students to enrol mark a “landmark moment” for the state.

“That student will be opening the floodgates for thousands more students, from every corner of our state, from a broader range of backgrounds to access a world-class education right here in South Australia,” said Szakacs.

Adelaide University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, International and External Engagement, Jessica Gallagher, also commented, “Opening enrolments marks a major milestone for Adelaide University and we are so excited to welcome our new cohort of commencing students and to welcome our continuing students too.”

“We’re building a place where they can access world-class education. Adelaide University is firmly on track to open and to open well in January 2026, bringing together significant academic and research capability to achieve even greater positive impact for our students, partners and the community,” Gallagher concluded.

As South Australia prepares for this major step, all eyes are now on how the merged institution will redefine the state’s future academic landscape.
