Three meteor showers set to light up the skies this weekend

Piscis Austrinids, Alpha Capricornids, and Southern Delta Aquariids are all hurling through the heavens and SA is a great place to get a glimpse!

Mother Nature is a glorious thing at the best of times but every now and then she likes to put on a show to really exhibit her beauty. This weekend is the perfect example.

Look to the skies any night from Friday – Sunday and you could be in for a treat with not one, not two, but THREE visible meteor showers occurring all across the Southern Hemisphere.

Piscis Austrinids, Alpha Capricornids, and Southern Delta Aquariids are all hurling through the heavens this weekend with around 15-20 meteors expected per hour and here in the little old land of Aus, is the best place in the world to catch a glimpse.

The show is caused by the breaking up of the Machholz comet and comes around each year from July 12 – August 23 but the best time to view it is the last few days of July.

The best time to see the incredible natural light show is around midnight when the sky is at its darkest. It just so happens to also be a new moon, making stars appear brighter.

And for those of you living in regional areas, count your lucky stars because you’ll have a better view than any due to the distance away from the city lights.

If you are keen to witness the spectacle, tonight might be your best bet with clear skies expected until tomorrow afternoon when clouds and showers will roll in, blocking the night sky.

Ideal viewing points around the metropolitan area include locations such as Windy Point Lookout, Lions Park Scenic Lookout in Wynn Vale, viewing spots along Mt Osmond Road on Mt Osmond and anywhere you can see a broad swathe of sky without streetlights glaring into your eyes. Basically, get as far away from bright lights as physically possible.

The Delta Aquariids, Piscis Austrinids and Alpha Capricornids meteor showers peak from Thursday, July 28–Sunday, July 31.
