Three new overtaking lanes are set to be constructed on Main South Road between Myponga and Cape Jervis as part of a $31.8 million investment from both the State and Federal Governments. This project aims to improve traffic flow, increase safety for all road users, and support future growth in South Australia.
The planned lanes will be situated in three key areas:
- Northbound between Second Valley and Normanville
- Southbound between Delamere and Second Valley
- Northbound between Cape Jervis and Delamere
A comprehensive planning study was carried out to select these locations, taking into account environmental impacts, socio-economic factors, and construction challenges. The study also included feedback from over 190 stakeholders, including locals, tourists, and other road users, highlighting the importance of improved road travel times and safety, which were crucial in choosing the lane locations.
During the construction phase, the project is expected to create approximately 115 full-time equivalent jobs, providing a boost to the local economy, while also improving road infrastructure.
“The Malinauskas Labor Government committed to improving safety on Main South Road between Myponga and Cape Jervis and after extensive consultation with the community, three locations for new overtaking lanes have been identified,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis says.
It was important we spoke directly with people who use the road so we could better understand the concerns of communities in and around this section of Main South Road.
“Now that we’ve identified the locations, we’ll get on with delivering these overtaking lanes to improve safety and travel times – and reduce driver frustration – along this stretch of road.”
Concept designs for the overtaking lanes are now in development. Further engagement with stakeholders and the community will take place as these designs progress.
