The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce a third and final show with comedy/rock superstar Tim Minchin. Due to public demand, Minchin will perform an additional show with the ASO on Thursday the 10th of March 2011, 8.00 pm at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
Get ready to rumble as heavyweight comedy rock star Tim Minchin takes on the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for a pull-no punches, modern day clash of the musical titans. Tim Minchin Versus The ASO, supported by Triple J, will include brand new material from the barefooted piano-basher, alongside those much loved Minchin classics as they were always meant to be heard: epically arranged for Australia’s best symphony orchestras.
Tim said: “Deep down I’ve always believed I deserved to have a symphony orchestra poised 24/7 to respond to my every musical whim. This is merely a step in the right direction.”
Tim will step into the ring with an arsenal of musical jabs and sucker punch melodies as he takes on the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra on their own turf – the almighty Adelaide Festival Centre.
Keeping the orchestra on the same page will be leading Australian conductor Benjamin Northey, In 2003 Northey made his professional debut conducting the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with Beethoven Symphony No 6. He made his European debut in 2005 with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg and participated in masterclasses with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Finnish, Radio Symphony Orchestra and Israel’s Haifa Symphony Orchestra. Returning to reside in Melbourne in 2006, Northey has rapidly become one of the country’s most versatile musical stars and is in constant demand as a guest conductor of all Australian state orchestras.
“I can’t wait to be a part of this tour and my only regret is that I won’t be able to sit in the audience and experience it myself. You cannot miss this, anything could happen, ” said leading Australian conductor Benjamin Northey.
Tim’s 2009/2010 tour, “Ready For This?”, was seen by 45,000 Australians, as well as enjoying a sell-out tour in the UK. He has recently written music and lyrics for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s new musical version of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda”, premiering in November 2010.
Winner of numerous awards including the 2009 Helpmann Award for Best Comedy Performer, the Best Alternative Comedian at the 2007 US Comedy Arts Festival, and the Perrier Award for Best Newcomer at the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Tim Minchin delights and enthralls lovers of both comedy and music.
The tour will kick off in Melbourne followed by performances in Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, and Tasmania.
Tim adds, “I’d like to allay any fears fans might have that my collaboration with the country’s finest orchestras will lead to a tempering of content. On the contrary. Violins make me angry. Oboes, furious.”
“Not only is Tim Minchin outrageously funny, he is also a beautiful singer and pianist. His piano solos are enough on their own to warrant the entry price”. Daily Telegraph, Sydney
