The 8 best steak spots in Adelaide have been named

Check out this list of the top 8 steaks in South Australia’s capital city, featuring some of our personal favourites.

Nothing beats a good steak cooked perfectly to your liking. Here in Adelaide, we’re fortunate to boast some excellent steakhouses that have meat-lovers returning time and time again. Personally, I can’t think of too many dinner options that top a smoky rib eye or sirloin paired with steakhouse chips, salad, and gravy.

Timeout, a popular magazine that specialises in city guides all over the world, has recently compiled a list of their top 8 steaks to be found and devoured in our very own home city. As a steak enthusiast myself, I couldn’t help checking out their ranking to see if any of my favourite spots made the cut.

Coming in at first place was The Little Hunter in Adelaide’s CBD. Located in a historic building on Victoria Street, The Little Hunter serves up a range of smoky, juicy steaks alongside a selection of lamb cuts or other grilled meats. According to Timeout, their standout is the 750-gram ribeye on the bone, served with either steakhouse chips, truffle-infused mash or baked potato.

Second place was awarded to the Hilton Hotel’s iconic Coal Cellar and Grill, a staple of Adelaide’s vibrant culinary scene. Last year, I tried their colossal Angus Tomahawk during a family dinner outing, an item that justifies their high ranking on Timeout’s list all on its own.

Picking up the bronze model was The Kitchen at SkyCity Adelaide. Offering a treasure trove of rustic South Australian culinary experiences, The Kitchen has evolved from a New York style grill to become a broader celebration of contemporary Australian food, serving up elevated classics with hot new takes to deliver dependable simplicity that hits the spot every time.

Just coming short of the top three, I was glad to see one of my favourite Adelaide steak spots make the list: the Latin-infused Hoosegow Charcoal Restaurant on Magill Road. With every cut roasted over mallee root charcoals, Hoosegow offer a range of mouth-watering steaks from deluxe scotch fillets to affordable rib eyes. I recommend pairing their cuts with a glass of South Australian red wine and one of their Latin American starters, such as the Mexican chilli squid or chargrilled guajillo octopus.

Gaucho’s Argentinian Restaurant cracked the top 5 with their signature steaks and blistered peppers. Located on Gouger Street, Gaucho’s have been grilling Argentinian-inspired steaks in Adelaide’s CBD since the late 1980s with a menu highlighted by scotch fillets, porterhouse, striploins, eye fillets, ribeyes or t-bones.

Just missing out on the top 5, Timeout listed the Scandinavian-inspired A Hereford Beefstouw at number six on their list. As a standout of the thriving dinner hub on Hutt Street, the sleek, Danish-owned restaurant have their own beef herd and offer a range of classic cuts and shared steaks for large groups or families. Carved right beside your table, I recommend giving the 1.5KG tomahawk a go. But be warned, this giant of a steak is not for the feint of heart.

Coming in at number seven, The Black Bull Hotel on Hindley Street offers a fantastic option for delicious steaks that won’t break the bank. In a historic building that dates back to 1838, the Black Bull chefs dish up an extensive list of steaks that start from $30 and don’t exceed $65. I’ve only been here once, but I thoroughly enjoyed my 300g South Australian Black Angus Scotch Fillet for just $42 with mashed potato and salad. I recommend heading to the Black Bull on the weekend when you can eat your meal out in the beer garden, but the historic bistro also offers a warm and atmospheric dining experience.

Snatching the final spot on Timeout’s list is another Argentinian-infused grill, and another of my personal favourites: La Boca Bar and Grill in Stamford Plaza. As one of the only restaurants in Adelaide that uses a traditional Argentinian asador grill (pictured below), La Boca offer a range of cuts of all shapes, sizes, and price ranges, including the only 2KG tomahawk steak I’ve come across in Adelaide so far. Definitely bring some friends along if you’re planning on giving that behemoth a try.

As Timeout have duly pointed out, Adelaide is home to an incredible selection of steakhouses and grills. If you haven’t already, book a reservation at any of the above destinations for a truly excellent culinary experience, especially for the steak enthusiasts among us.
