When you think about art galleries, you don’t often imagine a hole-in-the-wall down an alley in Adelaide’s CBD. But that’s exactly what you’ll find when you visit Gallery Flaneur. Created in 2018 by Sarah Maddock and Matt Jorgensen, the gallery is less than one cubic metre in size and was designed as a not-for-profit enterprise, boasting an enormous number of people – approximately 8,000 – who pass through the gallery every day.

“I often talk about it being the smallest gallery with the biggest viewer number!” Matt told Glam Adelaide in 2021. The gallery is all about showcasing local and sometimes national artists and celebrating their creative pieces. “We’re all about getting people out of the house and exploring the world we live in.”

The current exhibition features an assortment of more than 30 tiny paintings, some no bigger than 4x4cm, by artist Nina Jerebica. The exhibition, called ‘Mini Memento: Hidden in Plain Sight’, is located on the corner of Gawler Place and Fisher Place in the Adelaide CBD. It opened on Friday 5 December and will run until Thursday 8 January 2026.

“The exhibition features tiny streetscapes, houses and interiors that encourage people to slow down, lean in and rediscover a variety of everyday places that have caught my eye,” says Nina. “Most works are based on scenes in Adelaide, but I have also drawn inspiration from the Yorke Peninsula, Melbourne, Sydney and Bali. Each piece is a miniature portrait of a place where every millimetre matters.”

Favouring watercolours, gouache and fine liner pens, Nina describes her style as “intimate, detailed and observational”, and says that the small scale removes the anxiety associated with working with a large blank canvas.

Having painted for many years, Nina says her art provides a sense of calm, focus and connection, and allows her to honour small moments and overlooked places.

“It feels like a very personal exchange when I paint,” she says. “I fall into a flow state and everything else falls away.”

Nina says she only discovered Gallery Flaneur a few months ago, but knew immediately that it was the perfect spot for her exhibition. “The scale of the gallery suits the size of my pieces perfectly. In a large space they would get lost, but inside this tiny gallery, they feel like small treasures.”

Gallery Flaneur displays creative pieces from a wide range of artists, with the general requirement being that the work suits a small-scale space and reflects “curiosity, observation and a sense of place”. So, take a moment to stop by Gallery Flaneur, a hidden gem in Adelaide’s busy CBD, and appreciate the hours of work that go into crafting each one of these tiny treasures. Blink, and you’ll miss it!
